Caribbean Doctoral Bursaries to attend the 48th Society for Caribbean Studies UK Conference
This year, the Society is delighted to be awarding a limited number of bursaries for doctoral students based at institutions in the Caribbean to attend the Society for Caribbean Studies UK Conference, held in Bristol 2-4 July 2025, and then be hosted in London for a week long fellowship at the British Library.
This is an exciting opportunity for early career researchers from the Caribbean to share their research at an international conference outside the region and to build networks with colleagues working on the Caribbean based in the UK and beyond. We are grateful to the University of Bristol and the University’s Caribbean Studies Studio for making these bursaries possible.
With thanks to additional funding from the Eccles Institute at the British Library, the recipients of the bursary will also be hosted by the British Library for one week. During this week, you will recieve money to help with accommodation and subsistence costs, and will be invited to give a talk as part of the Library’s summer scholars lunchtime series.
The conference will last for three days, and include plenary sessions, keynotes, a rum punch reception, and conference dinner. This year, the conference will also coincide with Bristol’s St Pauls Carnival on 5th July 2025, and we are encouraging all delegates to extend their stay in the city to attend.
The Caribbean Doctoral Bursaries will cover:
- the conference registration fee,
- return flights to the UK
- up to five nights accommodation in Bristol, and food for the duration of the conference.
- travel from Bristol to London
- £750 from the Eccles Institute to cover accommodation and subsistence when in London
Where necessary, will write in support of your visa application, and also hope to make contributions to visa costs.
The deadline for these bursaries is 13th December 2024. Please submit your abstract using the Submission Form and complete the section for Caribbean Doctoral Bursaries. Applicants are asked to briefly describe their broader research and how attendance at the SCS UK annual conference will support their academic careers. Applicants who do not have an alternative source of funding and who may be otherwise unable to attend an international conference will be preferred but we strongly encourage all those eligible to apply.
